Water is the single most urgent vulnerability in any household. When municipal pressure drops, you have hours before local stores sell out. Here is the realistic math on how much you actually need.

1. The Non-Negotiable Volume Math

Standard guidelines recommend 1 gallon per person per day. In reality, that only covers bare survival drinking in moderate temperatures. Realistic household resilience requires 1.5 to 2 gallons per person per day to cover hydration, essential cooking, and basic wound/hygiene care.

2. Container Selection: What Works and What Leaks

• Food-Grade HDPE Plastic (Recycling #2): Heavy-duty, opaque containers specifically rated for potable water storage (e.g. 5-gallon stackable cubes or 55-gallon drums).
• Never Store in Milk Jugs: Thin biodegradable plastics degrade, crack, and leak within months, contaminating water with microplastics and bacteria.
• Keep Off Raw Concrete: Direct contact with porous concrete can leach industrial chemicals and moisture through plastic over time. Always elevate on wooden 2x4 slats or pallets.

3. Treatment and Rotation Rhythm

City municipal tap water is pre-chlorinated, but water stored long-term in containers should be treated with 6 to 8 drops of regular, unscented 6% household bleach per gallon if source purity is uncertain. Rotate stored water every 12 months on your quarterly maintenance calendar.
